SUPPORT FROM CHINA

The Chinese University Teachers' Association (CUTA) and the Chinese University Staff Association (CUSA) are trade unions representing, respectively, academic and non-academic staff at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

We strongly believe that employees of higher education should have the right to form unions to negotiate wages, benefits and other conditions of employment. We condemn the management of the European University of Lefke for actions it has taken to suppress the union. We urge the European University of Lefke to immediately reinstate employees who were fired because of their union activities. We also call on the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Education of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus to intervene to ensure that the rights of academic workers to form union are respected.
