The Malaysian Academic Movement (MOVE) is an umbrella organization representing the academics in all universities in Malaysia .

We are sadden to hear about the sufferings of our brothers and sisters at the European University of Lefke (EUL). It is clear that the actions taken by the management of EUL are in violations of the UNESCO ‘Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel’. The Recommendation was approved by the UNESCO General Assembly on 11 November 1997. All members of UNESCO are required to be in compliance with the Recommendation.

One of the fundamental rights of academic is the right to organize. We condemn the actions taken by the management of EUL in blocking the formation the academic union at EUL and in punishing those involved the organizing the union. We demand that the union be recognized and that those punished be reinstate.

The Chinese University Teachers' Association (CUTA) and the Chinese University Staff Association (CUSA) are trade unions representing, respectively, academic and non-academic staff at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

We strongly believe that employees of higher education should have the right to form unions to negotiate wages, benefits and other conditions of employment. We condemn the management of the European University of Lefke for actions it has taken to suppress the union. We urge the European University of Lefke to immediately reinstate employees who were fired because of their union activities. We also call on the President, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Education of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus to intervene to ensure that the rights of academic workers to form union are respected.

in the name of the German Education Union (GEW) I want to express our strong support to the demands of your union for better working condition at the European University of Lefke, for the recognison of your trade union and for the the reinstatement of your colleagues that have been dismissed.

I also want to unterline the solidarity of our union with your strike to insist on your civil rights as employees and citizens. All over Europe we can see, that education workers at universities are under pressure. Striking is never an easy choice for teaching personell, but your strike against the management of the European University of Lefke is justified. We support you in this struggle.

We hope that your protest will be successful and will give a clear signal to the management, the government, the media and the general public, that university staff has the right to organize in trade unions and that they are not accepting to be left behind with their salaries and working conditions.

Message from the Philippines

The All UP Workers Union and the All UP Academic Employees Union, the unions of the administrative staff and of the academic staff, respectively of the University of the Philippines extend our solidarity with our colleagues in the European University of Lefke, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the refusal of the management of the European University of Lefke to recognize the union of the university staff and the recent dismissal of two unionists.

The right to from associations and unions and to enter into collective bargaining agreements with their university administration is a right guaranteed by international covenants (ILO Convention No. 98, for example) and is a right enjoyed by academics in many parts of the world.

We call on the President of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, the Higher Education Council of Turkey, the Minister for Education, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to intervene to ensure that the basic human rights of academic workers are recognized and respected.
